The first thing that comes to a persons thoughts after suffering from back pain is to get some (long overdue?) bed rest and to refrain from any (somewhat) strenuous activity.

What’s the point of getting into condition and staying active? The simple truth is that activity, even mild exercise, is, frankly, the best way I know of to keep a strong and healthy lumbar spine. The science is clear; a strong core means a strong back which results in being less likely to suffer from the soft tissue inflammation that triggers sciatic nerve pain to begin with. Physical therapy manages pain by building a regular exercise routine that strengthens the core and stretches the support muscles and ligaments that often would be the cause of your sciatica.

You may not realize that you have the answers to these questions, but you do. Use these answers to determine if you need positioning tables, flat tables, special hydraulic tables, inversion tables, mat tables, tilt top tables, or another one of the many tables out there. Think of the function of each of these and think of your patients. Make sure that you can serve the different types of patients that need you. For example, hydraulic tables are great for those with mobility issues and can also treat a variety of other patients. They are heavy duty, so they can also handle an excessive amount of weight.

One of the decisions you need to make is whether the physical therapy provided to you by your insurance company is enough. In some cases, it may not be. In others, you may have the choice of more than one facility to offer you the treatment that you need. Learn what all of your options are so that you feel more in control. Many people don’t realize this, but the hamstrings, the muscles that run vertically in the back of the thigh, has a lot to do with back support. Without adequate limberness, the hamstrings can cause limited pelvic motion which will, after time, cause lower back pain and instigate improper posture.

Part of that additional training your therapist will provide will include information on how to properly bend, lift, and sit, as well as information about proper sleeping positions. Don’t neglect the importance of these instructions. A surprisingly high amount of lower back pain is simply caused by consistently bad posture. The advice your therapist provides isn’t intended as nagging. It is intended to enable you to live a life that is as pain free as possible.
